1977 Land Cruiser FJ40My first 4x4 wasn't a Land Cruiser, it was a 77 Chevy long bed 3/4T pickup. Purchased in 1984, it served me well for many years, but it was put to pasture after 200k plus miles on the chassis and axles.

2007 FJ Cruiser (Sold)I've added a CB radio, MV50 air pump and Staun Tire Deflators. I am working on either a 3in lift and new bigger tires and rims to come by the end of summer. Farther down the road I will replace front and back bumpers and a number of other things.

Been 4-wheeling for since 2004 (late bloomer, had to raise 7 kids before I had money to spend 4-wheeling). First started with a 2004 Frontier
Crew Cab 4x4, went the full route of upgrading skid plates, then suspension lift, then body lift, then starting over and going SAS with Dana 44, crawler gears and lockers front and rear. After rolling Frontier in 2012, stayed off the trails and then in July 2013 decided to get back into 4-wheeling by getting my first LC 80's series. So far (as of Dec. 2013 all I have done is oil
|
change, paint job, window tint, sliders, added drink holder, and just added quick disconnect to the front sway bar. Otherwise stock from what I know. Now comes the planting of the 4-wheeling seed and see how much I modify it.

Wanted to do more serious off-roading than what stock Explorers / Escapes handle. While I truly hate Toyota and am happy to explain why if you'd like the full story - a new FJ seemed the best vehicle for me, so I masked my hatred and purchased one - only to have my hatred reconfirmed for the same silliness Toyota propagated back in 1974 (refusal to correct simple tire vibration issues).
|
As for mods: I changed to rock worthy Kevlar tires (Goodyear Silent Armor) that have taken a bit of abuse fairly well. After a trip through Canyonlands I added rock rails from Metal Tech - they have earned themselves a kudo for both rocks and parking lot incidents. I have but not yet installed Bilstein liftable shocks (front is adjustable and both F & R are longer travel than the OEM Bilsteins) - but some day soon will lift the front and rear 1.5". I changed headlamps to some GE super-brights that aren't (waste of money but will use until they die and put the OEM back in).

Member since: 2009 2000 Tacoma 4WD (The Brat)First off-road capable vehicle I ever owned. I bought it for working on a property I own on a mountain outside of Prescott. The intent was utility, but that quickly turned to fun and I caught the 4WD bug for life! I beat that truck to within an inch of its life and it never disappointed me or broke. Hence began my love affair with 4-Wheeling and Toyota!
|
1985 4Runner SR5 (Elmo)Had been wheeling the 2000 Tacoma for a few years and was ready for the next level of play. Totally overshot that goal and ended up in a game far more extreme than I had anticipated. To their credit the learned ones were patient with me as I grew, and righted me every time I rolled... Easily walks over 48" boulders and up 60" ledges... (Stock 22re, 4-linked front and rear, bobbed, fully exo'd, dual-cases, 5.29s, spool in rear, Detroit locker in front, Longfield birfs and axles, 37" Goodyear MTRs, 223:1 crawl ratio, suspension seats and 5-point harnesses)
|
1995 FZJ80 (Fluffy) (Sold)Something safe and comfy for the wife and family. Stock, no lockers, but still went places the 4WD Tacoma never could!
1985 4Runner (Ms Piggy)The vehicle I should have bought before Elmo the conqueror! A nice mid-range rig for work and play. Daily driver for a couple of years. A classic I hope to fully restore... Good up to 30" obstacles, then things get a bit squirrelly... (LCE 22re, new Marlin 1200# HD clutch/HD W56/RF1 w 4.70s, 5.29s gears and Spartan lockers front and rear, All-Pro Extreme lift, 34" Nitto All-Terrains)
2010 FJ Cruiser (Sirloin Marsala)Needed something suitable for longer road trips AND 4-wheeling... (OME 4" lift, 6-speed, 33" Nittos All-Terrains)

I have always had a love for the TLC. I would hang out at Spector Off Road in Chatsworth, CA and drool over all the different models he had in his shop on display and the TLC parts yard. I had a 77 FJ40 after high school back in the early 90’s for a couple years but had to get rid of it when we had kids. Always wanted an FJ60 or 62 but just couldn’t afford it at the time. I settled for a Jeep Cherokee prior to the 80 as a daily driver/wheeler but the family quickly out grew it and it started falling apart. Just not the same quality as a Toyota.
|
I’ve been working in Logistics (Export/Import/Freight) for 17 years, the last 8 has been in supporting int’l logistics in an aerospace environment in Southern California. But once my 2 oldest kids finished high school we decided to pack it up and finally take that job transfer and move to Arizona.

Member since: It all started with a dirt bike with (depending on how far I needed to go) 2 to 3 Prestone bottles of fuel mix bungee corded to the forks. Then the passion of turning a wrench and morphing Dad's old truck into something I could take anywhere. That truck, my dog Merle and that Studebaker were instrumental in wooing my (now) wife. I was on my way home from checking out a super clean '73 Ford Bronco and spotted a blue 40 for sale, the journey began....
